Startup Nation Conference is a collaboration between the Idea Center at Miami-Dade College and Tel Aviv University in Israel with the support of the Knight Foundation. The goal of the initiative is to connect Tel Aviv – the world’s most successful innovation tech community after Silicon Valley- with Miami’s startup ecosystem.
The first edition of the conference took place at MDC’s Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami on May 17, 2016. Throughout the day, the attendees were invited to presentations by the leading tech companies from Israel, panel discussions, and after-hours networking events.
While the inaugural Startup Nation Conference was considered a success by its organizers, it is difficult to ignore the low participation of women entrepreneurs. The conference was dominated by all-male panel discussions and featured only two female presenters among twenty-seven speakers. Women also are a noticeable minority among the members of the advisory board of the event (two out of eighteen). Nevertheless, it made us proud to see a stellar Miami girl Meital Stavinsky of Greenberg Traurig taking an active part in the event.
The closing party of the conference was hosted by Ofer Mizrahi – a visionary developer and founder of Miami’s only sustainably designed district Ironside. Miami Girls Foundation is grateful to Mr. Mizrahi and Leandro Finol for their invitation to co-host the evening at Ironside, which presented a great opportunity for us to give visibility to Miami’s community of women entrepreneurs.
