WHY MIAMI?
I came to Miami from the Dominican Republic straight out of high school to claim my independence. My mother was not happy when I announced that I was leaving the comforts of my home to go venture to another country without her. Although I had grown up in New York from 4 to 14 years old, I was very sheltered by my family, so going to Miami by myself was a big step for me to take. I just knew that as a polio survivor, it would be very difficult for me to accomplish my goals living in the Dominican Republic. I had big dreams. I came trusting that I would find my way and I did.

When I arrived in Miami, at the young age of 18, I was filled with excitement, fear and awe. I met amazing people from the get-go. I was blessed to make new friends that offered me so many opportunities to grow. My journey in Miami was filled with a lot of “my firsts”: my first real job, my first car, my first apartment, and my first love. I got married, had my daughter, and got my education here. I established myself personally and professionally. I have lived through the ups and downs of creating a career in education to metamorphizing into being a women’s empowerment leader, serial entrepreneur and community activist. I am proud to say that I have been a South Florida resident for over 35 years. This is truly home for me.

The reason I chose to invest in this community is simply because it is now my turn to give back. As an immigrant, disabled woman, I don’t take for granted for one moment how blessed I have been to be part of an inclusive, diverse community.

PROBLEM
Many women, even if they are successful in their careers, still feel lonely, oppressed, insignificant and unworthy. Low self-esteem is often the catalyst for self-sabotaging behaviors. Physical, emotional and sexual abuse is still a common narrative for women. To make matters worse, social media has added more pressure for women to achieve perfection. As a psychotherapist that specializes in women’s mental health, trauma, depression and anxiety, I want to empower women to find their own voice, find work-life balance and embrace their inner beauty.

SOLUTION
I founded Suits, Stilettos and Lipstick in 2012 because I wanted to create a movement to empower women to live a healthy, happy, balanced and purposeful life. We do this by providing women with a strong support system while providing them with the tools for self and professional development. Later I founded Lipstick Foundation in 2013 to present an opportunity for women to give back to their communities. Both organizations work hand in hand to create a paradigm shift for women so that they know that they don’t need to do life alone.
